It’s true that the decline is less obvious but still visible. We may not see the soup lines but the food banks are running out of supplies much faster and there is a higher degree of homeless. Schools are asking for donations of toilet paper from the families of their students. I’m not sure of this, but this is a first in my 53 years of experience. The districts just don’t have the funds to supply basic disposable goods.
I have come to believe that we may be experiencing denial even among those that are on the bottom rungs of the ladder. The high degree of empty shopping centers, abandoned homes, closed schools and reduced work force are clear presentations of significant slump but for many the elephant in the room continues to be explained away.

You make a great point – there does seem to be two sides to this…the state of local governments/budgets seems to get buried in the press.
