One of the biggest threats over the next couple decades is the risk that food supplies are inadequate. Currently, stockpiles are low so any major event could leave Earth’s population with a couple months of food.

However, there is a longer-term story unfolding. Land and water is quickly disappearing as we destroy land and drain aquifers.

IWMI director general Colin Chartres says “Current estimates indicate that we will not have enough water to feed ourselves in 25 years time, by when the current food crisis may turn into a perpetual crisis.”

Some also predict peak phosphates, which are used to fertilize land, and peak oil, which is used to plow land, will accelerate the declines. Our food system converts resources, such as potash and oil, into calories.

Food scarcity has historically led to conflicts and mass migration. In today’s media-covered world, the ‘have-nots’ will be quick to discover where the ‘haves’ live.
