An article in the Times reads like something out of the 1950s. Apparently, efforts to harness nuclear fusion might prove fruitful over the next 20 years. According to some unnamed scientists, nuclear fusion could be ‘pouring’ into the UK electricity grid by 2030.
Forget about the insurmountable challenges of producing the energy of the sun for a second. Even if we were successful, would we be able to control the energy? Or would a test spiral out of control and burn up half the planet. Stay tuned…
“The crucial test will come this autumn when they ramp up the power. In theory they should start generating more power than they put in and if that happens it will be a clear demonstration to the world that laser fusion is ready to be harnessed. So far the signs are very good.”
OK, so I got my science ‘degree’ from a mail-order program (i.e. I have no science background), so who am I to talk? Fair point.
If I take my cynic hat off for a minute, I’d like to say that our search for new sources of energy is essential to our way of life. These are the types of projects governments should be investing in.
But the ape-man in me says “fire…bad”.
