Notice how energy use in China is dominated by the industrial sector. Compare this with the US, which uses energy evenly across transportation, buildings and industry.

Expect China’s energy consumption to look more like that of the US as China becomes less export-dependent and more consumption-driven.

I think that the reason China’s energy consumption is in the industrial sector is because China sets their GDP a year in advance (through central planning). This often gives inflated GDP compared to the U.S. as China allocates resources (primarily to the industrial sector) to meet their GDP targets. What do you think of this theory?

That makes a lot of sense. Industrial production and fixed asset investment is the stop-gap for GDP in China. Unfortunately it is taking more and more capital to produce the same gains.
